Building Stones Walk of Colchester October 21

A very unusual day with a unique event for the Essex Rock and Mineral Society! Graham was given a lift by John & Wendy Lacy. It was raining at the time, not unusual in itself. The journey by all accounts was uneventful until they reached a traffic jam on the A12 near Witham. The road was impassable due to flooding. They diverted to try going via Braintree only to find the rivers in full spate and the road flooded and impassable again. Effectively all routes to Colchester were cutoff. They tried again and ended at the back of an ever lengthening tailback on the A12. Eventually, realizing they were going nowhere they returned home, stopping on the way for a pub lunch. David Turner's attempts at travelling were thwarted by the same problems of flooding. Estimated depths were as much as 6ft in places and 50ft wide. Impossible to drive a car through. Another family which travelled from Chelmsford encountered the same problems and were forced to return home by the flooding! (I really find all these excuses pathetic, tell the truth! You looked out the window, saw it was raining and turned over for some more sleep and dreamed the rest.) Bob & Sandra Blackburn arrived early in Colchester with no trouble driving up the A12. They came all the way from Enfield! (Well Done, pity about the 6 hour journey home.) Anyhow, it seems as thought the trip was officially aborted. The Met. Office said that we had more than the regular months supply of rain dumped that day on Essex. Some you win, some you lose. Remember guys and girls I want your written excuses and pictures please for the website. The others don't believe you! (RC 31/10/2001) Previous Trips: Norfolk
