Essex Rock & Mineral Society Field Trip
Westmill Sand and Gravel Quarry, Ware, Herts. 16th August 2003

Just an interim report, but what a find by one of our newer members Carol Broad.

Carol unearthed part of a Plesiosaur femur and considering the nature of the site, which is gravels overlaying boulder clay, there was very little evidence of wear. It has been suggested that the femur was eroded out of deposits and sat for a very short time on top of the boulder clay before being covered by gravels (river?) that protected it from further harm. On one side are some circular pock marks in a row which look for all the world like teeth marks from perhaps a crocodile. A fine fossil indeed, rare enough but with marks hinting at it's demise at the hands of a predator, an even rarer find.

Close-up after a clean up! There was some mention that other plesiosaur remains have been found in the same quarry, (but not by our club members). Makes one wonder whether it is from the same individual.

Hope to write more about this location and what one might find when the information becomes available.
