Annual General Meeting of the Essex Rock & Mineral Society

The following members were elected to the Committee:

Chairman:                    Les Lanham

Vice-Chairman:

Secretary:

Treasurer:                    Bob Blackburn

Ordinary Committee Members elected: John Lacy, David Turner, Ron Flack, Alan Smart, & me.

Graham Ward is having a year off from committee work as he has given the Society 28 years continuous service on the committee. The position of Vice-Chairman is vacant for the time being. Those proposed declined the invitation, (me) due to the pressure of other commitments associated with the Society. Other nominees for the post included Bob Williams, but he will be facing several major operations within the forth coming year and will not be able to full fill the commitment of the post. He is also standing down as newsletter editor due to the same reason. Roger Coleman (me) has been proposed to stand in as a temporary editor until Bob is back in full circulation, this will first have to be ratified by the new committee. (Roger is quite happy to stand aside a let others do this provided they can meet the deadlines, any other willing member please contact Les Lanham to have your name put forward for consideration.)

Secretary post: this too is vacant! Ursula Deith who took on this role last year has done an outstanding job on behalf of the Society. However, Ursula is pursuing her career and does not have the time to devote to these duties. We all thank Ursula for the way she has carried out the task over the last twelve months. In one word, Brilliant!

Treasurer: you will notice this post has changed hands, Neville and Joyce will be moving out of the area shortly, hence the change! Bob Blackburn has stepped in to take on the role. Many thanks Bob, for making that step!

Vacant posts: The Society is over one hundred strong and I find it difficult to understand why members feel disinclined to vie for committee posts. We are all there to support one another, some of us are absolutely useless at one task and fantastic at another, the trick is to marry all the strong points together. The strength of the Society is in the ability of us all to contribute a little of our talent. We have had a great year in many ways, lots more on the way for next year, but if we sit back and think it all just happens then be it on our own heads! Having said this, it begs the question "Why didn't I stand as Vice-Chairman when proposed?" I was asked to carry on as an ordinary committee member and not stand for the post when I offered to plug the gap in private discussions before the AGM. No offence was taken on my part, I know where my talents lay!.

Roger Coleman 15 November 2002.
